[Seng]zhao says: "If there are characteristics, diverse extremes take shape; once diverse extremes have taken shape, right and wrong arise; once right and wrong have arisen, how could it be quiescent? When all characteristics are extinguished, there is nothing that is not quiescent." [Dao]sheng says: "The four lines above are the emptiness of sentient beings. The twenty-six lines below are the emptiness of dharmas. 'Quiescent' has the meaning of being calm, tranquil, and without activity. 'Characteristics' are the appearance of things. Sentient beings are easy to understand, but attachment to them is a heavy confusion; hence he clarifies it internally by their defilement. Dharmas are difficult to awaken to, but attachment to them is a light confusion; hence he reveals it externally by what is confused."
