[Seng]zhao says: Because the poor did not plant merit in the past, they were born into poor lanes; if they do not accumulate good now, it will be even worse later. Pitying their prolonged suffering, he mostly approached them to beg for food. Because he abandoned the rich to follow the poor, Pure Name criticized Kāśyapa for not being universal. [Dao]sheng says: Begging from the poor fundamentally takes compassion as primary; thus [Vimalakīrti] first rebukes the partiality of his compassion. Now, since the suffering of poverty is so pressing and acute, it should naturally take precedence—what partiality is there? To one who has not penetrated, it appears partial (hence it can be taken as grounds for rebuke; the point is that great compassion takes universality as primary). Yet applying it with partiality is truly questionable.
