[Seng]zhao says: Transmigration in saṃsāra, noble and base, is impermanent: some are poor now and rich later, or rich now and poor later. Viewing it broadly, suffering and pleasure are not different. Therefore, whenever abiding in the Dharma of equality, one should beg in succession and ought not leave the rich to follow the poor. [Dao]sheng says: Having begged out of compassion, his begging was again partial; thus [Vimalakīrti] next rebukes the partiality of his begging. There are four matters in begging for food, and going in succession is the first. Successive begging as a rule means not skipping over the order. Not skipping over the order comes from equality. Now, specifically going to poor lanes, though not violating the action itself, harms its intent. Those who abide in equality: going forth fundamentally seeks nirvāṇa; nirvāṇa being equal, one abides in it. If one abides in the equal Dharma, in principle there are no partial sentiments; hence it says one should beg for food in succession.
