[Kumāra]jīva says: The characteristic of combination is morsel food. There are four kinds of food: first, morsel food; second, food of aspiration, as when seeing a sand-bag one's life is not cut off, this is food of aspiration; third, food of karma, as when in hell one lives without eating because of sinful karma requiring long suffering of pain; fourth, food of consciousness, where sentient beings of the formless realm have consciousness and thought in continuity. Destroying the characteristic of combination is the real mark; he causes him to beg with this mind. [Seng]zhao says: The five aggregates and morsel food are both characteristics of combination. Destroying the combination of the five aggregates is called nirvāṇa; one should take morsel food with this mind. If so, then taking morsel food all day is nirvāṇa all day. [Dao]sheng says: Taking morsel food is the third matter. Generally, food of the desire realm is called morsel food. Morsel food is food taken in lumps by hand. A morsel is a composite thing, spoken of according to its meaning. Destroying combination means destroying the combination of the five aggregates. Nirvāṇa is the destruction of the five aggregates.
