[Seng]zhao says: Kṣatriya is the royal caste; rendered in the language of Qin, it means 'lord of the fields.' At the beginning of the kalpa, humans ate the flavor of the earth, and later shifted to eating naturally grown nonglutinous rice. Afterward, human nature gradually became deceptive, each staking out and cultivating land for himself; thereupon, they established one of virtue to adjudicate and divide the fields fairly. This was the origin of kings, and hence it was handed down as their name. Being noble and self-willed, they are often violent and willful, unable to practice forbearance and harmony.
