[Seng]zhao says: Subhūti considered that prominent elders, wealthy and self-indulgent, often harbored greed and stinginess without reflecting on impermanence. Although they feel gratified now, later they will certainly suffer poverty. Pitying their delusion, he mostly went to them to beg food. Next he entered the house of the Pure Name, who immediately took his bowl and filled it with rice; before handing it over, he mocked his lack of equality. He means that the myriad dharmas share an identical mark, and taking one as the standard, the rest can be known. If you are equal with regard to food, all dharmas are also equal; if all dharmas are equal, you are also equal with regard to food. Begging in this manner, only then may you take the food. Why discard the poor to follow the rich, giving rise to discriminatory thoughts on your own? [Dao]sheng says: With a mind like this, only then may you rely on it to take my food. The meaning is: if it is not so, do not take it.
