3.171

[Kumāra]jīva says: "If one takes sin to be sin, then defilement arises naturally in the mind; when defilement arises naturally in the mind, defilement can encumber it; when defilement encumbers it, one is a sentient being of sinful defilement. Not taking sin to be sin—this is the pure mind; when the mind is pure, then the sentient being is pure." [Dao]sheng says: "He cites the Buddha's words as proof. 'The mind is defiled' refers to the sentiment of clinging and delusion. 'Sentient beings are defiled' means that once the mind has defilement, sin necessarily extends to them. If one is able to be without clinging, that is purity; once the mind is pure, its sin is also eliminated."
