[Kumāra]jīva says: In the Hīnayāna, four truths are taught; in the Mahāyāna, one truth is taught. When it now says 'truth', it is this one truth; the one truth is the true nature of reality. Conventional phenomena are false and deceptive: they are claimed to exist yet do not, or claimed not to exist yet do; this is deceiving people. Seeing other truths and claiming that they will definitely eradicate one's delusion, while still failing to avoid deluded thoughts, is also deception. Now, the one truth is free from all these faults; therefore, it does not deceive people. From the one truth up to the non-self of all dharmas, this is the true nature of all dharmas, which are simply different phrases and different flavours within the one truth. It is because of this one truth that the Buddha-path is accomplished; the one truth is itself the cause of buddhahood, and is thus called the bodhimanda. [Seng]zhao says: The four truths are real and without deception.
