[Kumāra]jīva says: This is faith in the precepts. When attaining the four faiths, one first has faith in the Dharma, next in the Buddha, and thereafter in the Saṃgha and the precepts. Question: Among the four faiths, why is there first faith in the Dharma, next in the Buddha, and then in the Saṃgha and the precepts? Answer: For instance, a severely ill person takes medicine; if the illness is cured, he has faith in the wonder of the medicine. The wonder of the medicine must stem from the physician, so he has faith in the physician. Although the physician and the medicine are wondrous, it essentially relies on a skilled caretaker of the patient, so he has faith in the caretaker. Although these three matters are wondrous, it fundamentally depends on one's own ability to convalesce, so he has faith in himself. The four faiths within the Dharma are also like this. When contemplating the true mark and perceiving the truths, afflictions are immediately eliminated; then one has faith in the wonder of the Dharma. Although the Three Jewels are wondrous, practicing them essentially depends on oneself. Because one's karma of precepts is pure, the afflictive disease is eliminated; then one has faith in the precepts. Deeply having faith in the four dharmas, the mind is constantly joyful, capable of harmonizing supernatural powers and penetrating nature; hence it is not something that heavenly pleasures can compare to.
