4.244

什曰：大施會有二種，一、不用禮法，但廣布施；二、用外道經書、種種禮法祭祀，兼行大施。今善德禮法施也。生曰：婆羅門法，七日祀梵天、行大施，期生彼也。言已承嫡繼業於父舍然也。寄之可以致明法施之大矣。

[Kumāra]jīva says: There are two kinds of great assemblies of giving: first, not using ritual rules, but merely giving widely; second, using the texts of non-Buddhists and various ritual sacrifices while simultaneously practicing great giving. Now Śrībhadra gave according to ritual rules. [Dao]sheng says: According to the brahmanical rule, one sacrifices to Brahmā for seven days and practices great giving, expecting to be born there. This refers to carrying on the legitimate line and succeeding to the estate in his father's house in this manner. Drawing on this, the greatness of the giving of Dharma can be made thoroughly clear.
