4.270

什曰：若起悲而不為救物者，乖於悲也。當為救物而起悲心。肇曰：大悲之興，救彼而起，所以悲生於我而天下同益也。生曰：悲本所念在苦欲拔之也。若以實救為悲，悲之大者也。

[Kumāra]jīva says: If one gives rise to compassion without rescuing beings, it goes against compassion. One ought to give rise to a mind of compassion for the sake of rescuing beings. [Seng]zhao says: The arousal of great compassion arises from rescuing others; therefore, compassion is generated in oneself while all under heaven are equally benefited. [Dao]sheng says: Compassion originally focuses its mindfulness on suffering, wishing to extract it. If one takes true rescue as compassion, it is the greatest of compassion.
