[Kumāra]jīva says: If one wishes the assembly to be harmonious, it fundamentally depends on six dharmas: first, giving rise to bodily actions with a mind of loving-kindness; second, giving rise to verbal actions with a mind of loving-kindness; third, giving rise to mental actions with a mind of loving-kindness; fourth, when obtaining food, reducing the food in one's alms-bowl to make offerings to one senior monk and two junior monks; fifth, pure adherence to the precepts; sixth, wisdom free of outflows. If one practices these six dharmas, the assembly will constantly be harmonious and compliant, without discord or dispute. Formerly there were two assemblies that quarreled, and the Buddha taught the six dharmas of concord and respect because of this. [Seng]zhao says: Giving rise to bodily, verbal, and mental actions with a mind of loving-kindness are three; fourth, when receiving substantial sustenance, sharing it with others; fifth, pure adherence to the precepts; sixth, cultivating wisdom free of outflows. Without a straightforward mind, there is no way to fully possess the six dharmas; without the six dharmas, there is no way to harmonize the assembly. If the assembly is not harmonious, this is not the path of respect and compliance.
