[Seng]zhao says: Great compassion is unconditioned by objects, yet there is nowhere it does not take as an object; because there is nowhere it does not take as an object, it can generate illness in response to beings. Generating illness in response to beings, then with respect to myself there has never been an illness. Having never been ill, it can therefore share the characteristics of all illnesses without contravening the signless Way. Why so? Great compassion is unconditioned; being unconditioned, it is signless. The illness generated through this is also signless; therefore he says: "My illness is formless and cannot be seen."
[Dao]sheng says: Illness has form, and in principle must be visible; yet it lacks reality, which is why he speaks thus.
