[Kumāra]jīva says: The arising of illness has [two] factors. First, due to clinging to a self in the past, one extensively generated defilements and karma; when defilements and karma ripen, one experiences suffering. Second, due to clinging to a self in the present, the mind is distressed; because the mind is distressed by clinging to a self, the illness increases.
