5.186

[Seng]zhao says: When there is self and what belongs to a self, the two dharmas arise of themselves. Once the two dharmas have arisen, the internal and external take shape. Once the internal and external have taken shape, the various dharmas have distinct names. Once the various dharmas have distinct names, right and wrong subvert each other. Once right and wrong subvert each other, the myriad afflictions are formed. If one can refrain from thinking of internal and external dharmas and practice with an equal mind, one enters the practice of emptiness and is free from the affliction of the conception of dharmas. 'Internal and external' means the faculties and the dusts. [Dao]sheng says: 'Internal' is the self; 'external' is all dharmas. These then are opposed as two. Saying 'not thinking of them and practicing in equality' constitutes leaving them behind.
