[Kumāra]jīva says: Above he clarified non-self and non-dharma, but had not yet dispelled emptiness. If one does not dispel emptiness, then emptiness becomes an encumbrance, and an encumbrance is an illness; hence he clarifies that the illness of emptiness is also empty. [Seng]zhao says: The attachments and encumbrances of sentient beings are profound and heavy, and cannot be discarded all at once; therefore, through stages one gradually dispels them until reaching non-dispelling. Above he eliminated self by means of dharmas, and eliminated dharmas by means of emptiness; now, by using ultimate emptiness to empty emptiness, he reaches the utmost limit of afflictionlessness. [Dao]sheng says: The principle of emptiness is without illness; illness lies only in having emptiness. Speaking in terms of illness, emptiness is therefore called an illness.
