[Kumāra]jīva says: "He understands that illness is not real, and therefore can abide in it without confusion. If one takes illness to be truly existent, then illness cannot be eliminated. Sentient beings are boundless, and illnesses are also endless. If the nature of endless illness were truly existent, how could beings be saved? At once one would become bewildered, and the mind would give rise to regression. If illness is not real, it can easily be eliminated; the mind of compassion then arises, with a vast vow to concurrently deliver everyone." [Dao]sheng says: "Moreover, relying on this reflection, he arouses the mind of great compassion. 'Just as this illness of mine is not real and does not exist' means that he himself has already attained thorough realization. 'So too the illness of sentient beings is not real and does not exist' says that they are not enlightened. It means wishing to teach them so that they realize this truth. However, his arousing the attitude of great compassion was already fully set forth in the preceding text, so here it simply clarifies the reflection."
