[Kumāra]jīva says: "This refers to not yet having deeply entered the true character [of dharmas]: seeing that sentient beings exist, one's mind gives rise to affection and attachment, and by relying on this one arouses compassion; this is called great compassion associated with affection and views. Great compassion associated with affection and views is false, deceptive, and impure; it can cause one to give rise to thoughts of weariness, and therefore it should be cast aside." [Seng]zhao says: "If one disciplines oneself, one should first contemplate that one's own illness and the illness of sentient beings are formed by causes and conditions, being illusory and lacking reality; one should arouse compassion with this mind. If this contemplation is not yet pure, and one sees sentient beings, feels affection for them, and arouses compassion, this is called compassion associated with affection and views. Although this compassion is good, it is mixed with affection, views, and an intentional realm of mind, and has not yet escaped burdens; therefore, it should be abandoned." [Dao]sheng says: "When engaging in the above two contemplations and arousing great compassion, if within the contemplation there is a mind of affectionate regard, and one also sees sentient beings and wishes to deliver them, this is great compassion associated with affection and views."
