[Kumāra]jīva says: To say that he surpasses me—how could it be only the other worthy ones? This is merely an expression of profound admiration; how could it be the actual reality? [Seng]zhao says: Why must the thirty-two thousand necessarily be incompetent, and why must Mañjuśrī alone be supreme? My thought is that the ultimate man's transformations and strategies are boundless, his hidden and revealed traces differing; thus they alternately show greater or lesser capacity to respond to the sentiments of sentient beings. Who would dare fix their superiority and inferiority, or assess their gains and losses? Mañjuśrī, about to suit the minds of the multitude and accept the mission, therefore first praised the virtues of the Pure Name so as to give rise in the assembly to the realization that he is difficult to encounter. That man's Way is exalted and he is difficult to engage in conversation with; I should merely receive the Buddha's holy command and go inquire after his illness.'
