6.194

什曰：無宅無神，隨宅主有優劣，故神有精麁。未曾有室，故以天女為神也。生曰：外國亦以神為天也。夫有福之家必有福神附焉，是以菩薩託為之矣。是入生死事也。

[Kumāra]jīva says: No residence lacks a spirit. According to the master of the residence, whether superior or inferior, the spirit is refined or coarse. Because this was an unprecedented room, a goddess served as its spirit. [Dao]sheng says: In foreign countries, spirits are also called devas. A household that possesses merit inevitably has a meritorious spirit attached to it; therefore, the bodhisattva assumed this role. This is a matter of entering into saṃsāra.
