6.4

[Kumāra]jīva says: The dharmakāya mahāsattvas are free of physical and mental fatigue. But as for the body of a śrāvaka bound by afflictive karma, although the mind delights in the Dharma, the body suffers weariness; thus arose the thought of resting. Śāriputra was advanced in years and frail in body among the disciples, so he was the first to give rise to this thought, without needing to manifest burdened traces. Furthermore, because he knew Vimalakīrti would certainly perceive his mind in advance, he simply thought it without speaking. Examining the later statement, 'Where shall these great beings sit?', it seems he inferred from his own fatigue to consider the physical state of the assembly, and gave rise to this thought fearing they had need of seats.
