[Kumāra]jīva says: For shielding against wind and rain, nothing surpasses a house; for eliminating all conceptions, nothing is more wondrous than emptiness. It can also cut off all interrogations and subdue the hostility of māras, just as when a building is deep and dense, troubles from bandits naturally vanish. It is also said: existence is not the true essence, but merely visited from time to time; emptiness is the principal principle, and taken as the constant abode. [Seng]zhao says: Halls and buildings shield from wind and frost; emptiness and quiescence shield from defiling thoughts. [Dao]sheng says: As related to conditions, it exists—this is external existence. In its self-nature it does not exist—this is internal voidness. That which can shelter from the wind and rain of what is contrary to Dharma and ward off the disaster of the bandits of defilement is the principle of a house.
