[Kumāra]jīva says: There are four flavors: first, going forth to leave the five desires; second, practicing dhyāna to leave turmoil and afflictions; third, wisdom to leave false thinking; fourth, nirvāṇa to leave saṃsāra. There are also two kinds of liberation: first, liberation from afflictions; second, liberation from hindrances. It is also said that unoutpoured thirst is called the nature of craving; when craving is severed, one attains liberation. Because liberation quenches the thirst of craving, it is called syrup; the four flavors are also syrup because they eliminate the thirst of craving.
[Seng]zhao says: Unoutpoured amṛta fills their body; the Dharma-syrup of the eight liberations moistens their person.
[Dao]sheng says: Craving is the root of bondage, characterized by insatiability; like thirst needing water, it is great suffering. As for those who are liberated, non-craving serves as syrup, and absence of suffering serves as flavor.
