什曰：外國破敵得勝則竪勝幡，道場降魔亦表其勝相也。肇曰：外國法，戰諍破敵，立幡以表勝。菩薩摧煩惱賊、降四魔怨，乃立道場建勝相也。

[Kumāra]jīva says: In foreign lands, when defeating an enemy and gaining victory, they erect a victory banner; subduing māras at the bodhimaṇḍa also signifies the mark of victory.
[Seng]zhao says: According to the custom of foreign lands, when fighting and breaking the enemy, they raise a banner to display victory. The bodhisattva crushes the thieves of affliction and subdues the enemies of the four māras, whereupon they establish the bodhimaṇḍa and set up the mark of victory.
