什曰：劫初時未有日月亦未有眾生，幽冥處初不見日月，故為作日月，令得照明也。

[Kumāra]jīva says: At the beginning of the kalpa there were not yet sun or moon, nor were there sentient beings. In dark places one initially does not see the sun or moon, so he acts as the sun and moon for them, enabling them to obtain illumination.
