什曰：深行菩薩非所疑也。今淺行者處不淨國，恐其行淺功微未能自拔。譬如少湯投之大水，亦如少力之人入水救溺，未能兼濟則與彼俱淪。故問以何為法得生淨國也。肇曰：將厲此土始學菩薩令生淨國，故發斯問也。

[Kumāra]jīva says: Those of deep practice have no doubt. Now, regarding those of shallow practice dwelling in an impure land, it is feared that their practice being shallow and their merit slight, they cannot yet rescue themselves. It is like pouring a little hot water into a vast body of water, or like a person of little strength entering the water to save someone drowning: unable to rescue both, he sinks together with the other. Therefore, they ask what dharmas allow one to attain birth in a pure land. [Seng]zhao says: Wishing to encourage the beginner bodhisattvas of this land to attain birth in a pure land, they raise this question.
