[Kumāra]jīva says: Like a monk practicing dhyāna in the forest: when it was time to eat, he took his bowl and went out of the forest, meeting an evil bandit on the path. The evil bandit drew his bow to shoot him, but the monk forgave the other and blamed himself, generating no ill will. Pointing to his belly, he said to the bandit: 'You should shoot this. It is for the belly that I left the forest, thus bringing on this distress; this is merely the fault of the belly.' Examining oneself and forgiving others is of this kind. Not criticizing others' shortcomings is not being like that dull-witted karmadāna who licked filth on the ground to seek people's shortcomings. From examining one's own faults up to seeking all merits together constitutes a single matter. [Seng]zhao says: Examining one's own faults, the faults naturally dissolve; criticizing others' shortcomings, the shortcoming is in oneself: the seventh dharma.
