9.122

[Kumāra]jīva says: The myriad wholesome deeds are impermanent and take shape according to one's intentions; therefore, one must use upāya to dedicate them toward the Buddha-Way. For example, King Bimbisāra was imprisoned; through an opening in the prison, he saw the Buddha pacing back and forth on the mountain in the distance. He rejoiced greatly, and was due to be reborn in Tuṣita Heaven. While still [in the prison], he smelled the food-fragrance of Heavenly King Vaiśravaṇa, and having starved, his mind became exceedingly attached, [thinking:] 'I shall now go and be reborn where that food is!' Thereupon he was instantly reborn by transformation upon Vaiśravaṇa's tower. If even minor [intentions] bring about dedication, the great [Way] should all the more be so. [Seng]zhao says: Upāya-dedication is the essential practice for advancing in wholesome deeds; hence [they] constantly abide in it.
