[Kumāra]jīva says: There are three kinds of dhyāna-concentration: first, Mahāyāna; second, Hīnayāna; third, ordinary worldlings. The dhyāna of ordinary worldlings gives rise to pride and conceit of self. The dhyāna of Hīnayāna seeks personal verification of perfection alone; it can burn away manifold wholesome deeds and destroy the roots of the unexcelled Way, being an evil destination for a bodhisattva—hence they view it like a hell. [Seng]zhao says: Although dhyāna-concentration is joyful, if one settles complacently in it, the Great Way will not be achieved. Bodhisattvas take no pleasure in it, and thus regard it as a hell.
