9.298

肇曰：欲言此岸，寂同涅槃。欲言彼岸，生死是安。又非中流，而教化眾生。此蓋道之極也。此岸生死，彼岸涅槃，中流賢聖也。生曰：夫化眾生使其斷結離生死至泥洹耳。而向言無三，似若不復化之，故云爾也，然則三不無矣。

[Seng]zhao says: If you wish to call it this shore, its quiescence is the same as nirvāṇa. If you wish to call it the other shore, it is at ease in saṃsāra. Nor is it in midstream, yet it teaches and transforms sentient beings. This is indeed the culmination of the Way. This shore is saṃsāra, the other shore is nirvāṇa, and midstream is the worthy and holy ones. [Dao]sheng says: Transforming sentient beings means causing them to sever afflictions, leave saṃsāra, and reach nirvāṇa. Because it was said just before that the three do not exist, it might seem as if it no longer transforms them, hence it is stated thus; this being so, then the three are not non-existent.
