9.90

肇曰：阿難於五百弟子中多聞強記第一。今聞佛事，乃自審寡聞也。生曰：阿難豈不知己之多聞本有在乎。自取不達，以申佛之意也。

[Seng]zhao says: Ānanda was foremost in erudition and powerful memory among the five hundred disciples. Now hearing of the Buddha's works, he examines himself and recognizes his scant learning. [Dao]sheng says: How could Ānanda not know that his own erudition was fundamentally relative? He took upon himself the role of one who had not mastered it, so as to express the Buddha's meaning.
