[Kumāra]jīva says: The "citadel of the Dharma" is the Dharma of true reality. Preventing beings from falling into erroneous views is called "protecting." Furthermore, all the sūtras and dharmas are named the citadel of Dharma; they protect, uphold, and propagate them so that they do not perish. When there are those who can uphold the true Dharma, they also protect them. [Seng]zhao says: Outwardly they act as a citadel protecting the Dharma; inwardly they possess the firmness of upholding it.
