[Kumāra]jīva says: The Sanskrit text says 'erecting a palace in empty space freely and without hindrance'. Emptiness cannot be used as a palace; similarly, without sentient beings one cannot attain a pure land. Furthermore, it says: in empty space one can make a palace, but one cannot use empty space to make a palace—one must use timber and wood before it can be completed. Likewise, although a bodhisattva understands emptiness, he cannot attain it merely with an empty mind; he must use the three causes to complete his land. Again, because the intent differs, the sutra text is not identical. [Dao]sheng says: Erecting a palace is a metaphor for bringing sentient beings to fruition. An empty plot of land is an unhindered place, a metaphor for taking what is free of defilement; defilement is hindrance.
