[Kumāra]jīva says: Bodhisattvas have their own four fearlessnesses; these are not the fearlessnesses of a buddha. Fear arises from deficiency; having no deficiency, there is no fear. Being able to preach but unable to practice is also a cause of fear; now, being able to preach and able to practice, they are without fear. Being able to preach and able to practice is called the Dharma. [Seng]zhao says: Bodhisattvas have a separate four fearlessnesses: first, attaining dhāraṇī of hearing and retaining; second, knowing the faculties of sentient beings; third, not seeing anyone who can present a difficulty to oneself that one cannot answer; fourth, answering in accordance with questions and skillfully resolving all doubts. Possessing these four virtues, they can overshadow the great assemblies. The ninety-six kinds of heterodox paths each have their own assemblies, hence it says "all."
