[Kumāra]jīva says: This is precisely the Dharma of true reality among the four reliances. Above, under the twelve links of dependent origination, it was clarified that cultivating practice as taught and according with dependent origination allows one to attain the endurance of the non-arising of dharmas; here, it clarifies practicing the four reliances by relying on the true mark of the twelve links of dependent origination. [Seng]zhao says: Ignorance is the root of the twelve links. Once ignorance is extinguished, the remaining conditions are also extinguished. 'Fundamentally and entirely' means being constantly extinguished from beginning to end, never being extinguished again. Being constantly extinguished from beginning to end without further extinction is precisely what accomplishes the meaning of inexhaustible extinction. [Dao]sheng says: 'Fundamentally and entirely extinguished' means that it must ultimately be so. Since in the end it must be extinguished, how could birth ever exist? If birth does not exist, what could ever be extinguished? Thus there is nowhere to enter and nowhere to return.
