[Seng]zhao says: The merit of making offerings compared to wise understanding and prajñā is assessed across various sūtras. [Dao]sheng says: Offerings of food and clothing fundamentally apply effort to generate mundane fortune; they are not the method for seeking principle. Based on these, one can at best be reborn among humans and gods; ultimately one cannot attain buddhahood. Those who make offerings to the dharmakāya take what the Buddha embodied as their concern, reaching great awakening and wisdom. Comparing these two, how could one speak of their relative merits in the same breath?
