The Buddha told the Heavenly King: "In the past, immeasurable asaṃkhyeya kalpas ago, there was a buddha in the world named Bhaiṣajyarāja Tathāgata, Arhat, Samyaksambuddha, Vidyācaraṇasampanna, Sugata, Lokavid, Anuttara, Puruṣadamyasārathi, Śāstā Devamanuṣyāṇām, Buddha, Bhagavān. His world was named Mahāvyūha, and his lifespan was twenty minor kalpas. His saṅgha of śrāvakas numbered thirty-six hundred million nayutas, and his saṅgha of bodhisattvas numbered twelve hundred million. Heavenly King, at that time there was a wheel-turning sage king named Ratnachattra, fully endowed with the seven jewels, who ruled over the four continents. The king had a thousand sons, handsome, brave, robust, and capable of subduing enemies. At that time, Ratnachattra and his retinue made offerings to Bhaiṣajyarāja Tathāgata, providing all that brought comfort, for a full five kalpas. When the five kalpas had passed, he addressed his thousand sons: 'You also should make offerings to the Buddha with a profound mind just as I have.' Thereupon, the thousand sons received their father the king's command and made offerings to Bhaiṣajyarāja Tathāgata for another full five kalpas, providing all comforts.
