[Kumāra]jīva says: He hoped there might be extraordinary offerings of the great-virtue devas, and if there were any superior to this, he yearned to attain them. It means that although he had exhausted all his treasures, he could not supremely delight the sage's heart; he hoped that beyond those treasures there might be something to give voice to his sincerity, and therefore gave rise to this thought to reflect further on superior offerings. [Seng]zhao says: Exhausting all worldly delicacies and treasures could not express his ultimate devotion; he hoped that beyond these treasures there was a distinct, wondrous offering to give voice to his sincerity. Furthermore, past conditions were about to converge, so he gave rise to this thought. [Dao]sheng says: Citing the past verifies that offering to the dharmakāya is superior.
