[Kumāra]jīva says: Dhāraṇīs are immeasurable; the true mark is one among dhāraṇīs. When the true mark is preached in a sūtra, the true mark is itself the seal. Sealing this sūtra with the seal of the true mark makes it a profound sūtra. Furthermore, for 'seal' (印), the Sanskrit text says 'mark' (lakṣaṇa), meaning the true mark. Taking the true mark as the sūtra is to label its mark. [Seng]zhao says: Subsumed under the bodhisattva Dharma treasury, it is therefore not the treasure of the Hīnayāna. Sealed by the dhāraṇī seal, it is certainly not a worldly path. What is sealed by the dhāraṇī must be true; what is subsumed by the Dharma treasury must be precious. Since it is treasured within the Dharma treasury and sealed with the dhāraṇī, how could ordinary people unlock it? This shows that the Dharma treasure is profound and solid, difficult to peer into. [Dao]sheng says: 'Dhāraṇī' means to hold. If one holds the true mark without losing it, among all devas, humans, māras, and Brahmās, one will no longer fear having an uncomprehended meaning. Just as a royal seal serves as credentials so that passes, fords, and all prohibitions cannot bar or detain one: if it is genuinely sealed and held, the sūtra thus sealed will have no obstructions.
