[Kumāra]jīva says: 'Free from self' is the emptiness of sentient beings; 'free from what belongs to self' is the emptiness of dharmas. The four lines above stated the similes for emptiness and non-self; this directly states the meaning of emptiness and non-self. [Seng]zhao says: 'Self' is the marvelous master of the body. 'What belongs to self' refers to everything outside the self—the body, state, wealth, wife, children, and myriad things—as all belonging to me. When the wise contemplate the body, within the body it is empty and quiescent, and both aspects are shed.
