[Dao]sheng says: To think to himself as he lay sick means feeling sorrowful reflection over his illness. To have a body is to have illness; this is simply the constant way of the world. What sorrow could a person of discernment feel upon realizing this? Yet the sons of the elders in Vaiśālī have all had an audience with the Buddha to hear the Dharma. Vimalakīrti ought to have joined them, but hindered by illness he could not participate. In principle, this naturally gives rise to sorrow, so he uses this to venerate the Dharma and invite the Buddha to inquire about his illness.
