[Seng]zhao says: In undertaking a mission from the Buddha, a person of weight is truly required. The Mahāsattva Pure Name possesses immeasurable wisdom, which is not something a disciple can measure up to. Furthermore, having once been rebuked by him and remaining silent without being able to reply, how would I dare lightly undertake this mission, thereby incurring the reproach of falling short?

[Dao]sheng says: With the subtle vehicle, whatever coarse [matter] is engaged is fully exhausted. But what was tapped here was merely an immediate response to living beings; how could there be an occasion when Śāriputra was genuinely inadequate? The intention behind his inadequacy truly lies in this. If one wishes to manifest it as real now, there must be something upon which it rests. Vimalakīrti's manifest trace lay in quick-witted eloquence, inspiring dread throughout the entire state. In the past, there was a occasion that gave rise to debate, and Śāriputra once showed deference to him, considering himself inadequate—who could call this false?
