[Kumāra]jīva says: Pāpīyas in the language of Qin means 'the murderer'. He always wishes to sever people's life of wisdom, hence he is called 'the murderer'. He is also called 'the evil among evils'. Evil has three kinds: the first is evil, the second is great evil, and the third is the evil among evils. If evil is inflicted upon oneself and one repays it with evil, this is called evil. If another does not violate oneself, yet one harms them without cause, this is called great evil. If another comes to make offerings and show respect, and one does not think of repaying kindness but on the contrary harms them, this is called the evil among evils. The Māra King is the evil among evils; his evil is the most extreme. The Buddhas always wish to bring peace and security to sentient beings, yet he inversely disturbs and ruins them; hence it is called extreme. [Seng]zhao says: Pāpīyas in the language of Qin is sometimes called 'the murderer', and sometimes called 'extreme evil'. He severs people's wholesome roots, and is thus called 'the murderer'. Violating the Buddha and disturbing the Saṅgha has no crime greater than it, hence he is called 'extreme evil'.
