4.16

[Seng]zhao says: Generating the unsurpassed mind, cultivating non-retrogressing practice, and receiving the prophecy to realize the Way were the original purpose of Maitreya's delivering the teaching. Now, wishing to clarify that the great impartial Way has non-practice as its cause and unsurpassed right awakening has non-attainment as its fruit, he first questions Maitreya. Once it is clarified that there is no prophecy and no attainment, then he can broadly deliver the multitude of beings and unify the ultimate purport of the myriad things, so as to propagate the non-dual path of bodhi. Where there is birth, there is prophecy; where there is no birth, there is no prophecy. Therefore he examines and interrogates the three times: by means of which birth did you obtain the prophecy?
