[Kumāra]jīva says: Ordinary persons and the Hīnayāna give rise to a mind of sympathetic joy because they see sentient beings happy; now he wishes him to give rise to a mind of sympathetic joy because he upholds the true Dharma, his mind generating joy within the Dharma. [Seng]zhao says: Desiring that both oneself and others uphold the true Dharma, sympathetic joy is born from this. [Dao]sheng says: Sympathetic joy originally rejoices that the other has managed to leave behind what is not the Dharma; this means the mind resides in the Dharma. If one takes upholding the true Dharma as sympathetic joy, it is the true sympathetic joy.
