[Seng]zhao says: Ordinary beings and noble ones are of one suchness; how could there be a distinction of gain and loss? [Dao]sheng says: As for suchness, there is no difference between attaining and not attaining. Since there is no difference between attaining and not attaining, and yet Maitreya attains it, this is provisionally taking non-attainment as attainment. If Maitreya, by non-attainment, has no attainment, then when all sentient beings do not attain, that should also be the principle of this attainment. Thus, saying that sentient beings should also receive the prophecy is to clarify that Maitreya does not truly receive a prophecy. 'Dual' refers merely to two affairs; 'different' means that the two marks are distinct. Once their affairs are dual, then they become different from each other; hence he first says 'not dual' and afterwards 'not different'. Having already taken the affair of suchness above, the explanation merely adduces the meaning of suchness.
