[Kumāra]jīva says: "Since Maitreya has already inherited the venerable rank and is due to become a buddha in this land, he is the one revered by the assembly; hence he was addressed first. The relative greatness between Maitreya and Vimalakīrti cannot yet be determined. Some say: 'Although Vimalakīrti is great, he has reasons for not becoming a buddha.' Others say: 'Although Maitreya is great, he has a purpose in deliberately declining to go.' Or perhaps this was an emanation body of Maitreya, not his true substance. Due to these three reasons, there was this trace of yielding. Since Maitreya was unable, the Buddha should have passed over to address Mañjuśrī; yet the reason he also addressed the other people is that, although one person was unable, the assembly should not be suppressed. Searching through the assembly for capability, he broadly addressed them. He also wished to have each recount what they had heard, so as to fully display Vimalakīrti's excellence." [Seng]zhao says: "Maitreya is a Brahmin clan name from Southern India. Born of this clan, he took it as his name."
