[Kumāra]jīva says: This means that he does not see them as having distinct characteristics.
[Seng]zhao says: Māras delight in and cling to the five desires and do not seek to transcend the world; hence they are bound to saṃsāra. Adherents of heterodox teachings, although seeking to transcend the world, cling to their own paths; hence they are bound to wrong views. The mahāsattva contemplates saṃsāra as identical to nirvāṇa, and therefore can refrain from abandoning it; he contemplates wrong views as identical to right views, and therefore can remain unmoved. Being unmoved and not abandoning, he can therefore take them directly as attendants.
[Dao]sheng says: He also does not abandon the various views. Māras and non-Buddhists represent the culmination of turning against the principle; yet since he has grasped their fundamental principle, beyond this what more is there to say?
