[Kumāra]jīva says: Contemplating it in terms of actual fact, it is as if there were no illness, yet he says there is; moreover, its characteristics have not yet been seen, so he seeks its characteristics.
[Seng]zhao says: Having known that from which the illness arises, he further inquires into the characteristics of the illness arising from it. The four hundred and four illnesses each have distinct characteristics; what characteristic does the illness of great compassion have? Intending to clarify that the illness arising in response to beings out of signless great compassion, though displaying illness all day long, is all day long devoid of characteristics.
[Dao]sheng says: Inquiring into the state of the illness should have preceded [the discussion on] emptiness; earlier, because replying based on reality would hinder the intent of asking about emptiness, and also because once the meaning of emptiness was clarified, its state would then become manifest, it is placed here.
