[Kumāra]jīva says: According to the custom of foreign countries, the meritorious karmas performed from birth to death are recorded one by one. When life ends, those nearby recount them to the person, causing them to rely on merit so that the mind has no grief or fear. [Seng]zhao says: Fearing that beginning bodhisattvas may be perturbed by illness, he encourages them to recall the merit they have cultivated to gladden their feelings. [Dao]sheng says: If one has merit, one's future rebirth will certainly be superior; what is there to fear?
